April 27, 2004: Integrated Imaging May Improve Epilepsy Surgery
A new imaging system—now being developed by a multi-institutional team of engineers, scientists, and physicians—may improve the chances of successful surgery for some epilepsy patients. By integrating information about brain anatomy, biochemistry, electrical activity, and blood flow, the imaging system may shorten surgery times and allow surgeons to more precisely pinpoint, and then remove, damaged brain tissue that causes seizures.

May 14, 2004: NIH, NASA, and NSF Conduct Workshop on Image-Guided Interventions
The NIBIB and NCI along with NASA and the NSF conducted an “Image-Guided Interventions Workshop” on May 13-14, 2004, at the Holiday Inn Select Hotel in Bethesda, Maryland. The purpose of the workshop was to promote interdisciplinary team science and to provide recommendations to ensure that NIH, NASA, and NSF programs address important needs and issues associated with image-guided interventions (IGI). The agenda was aimed at (l) covering a broad spectrum of technological advances related to image-guided technologies; (2) providing an overview of ongoing research at the NIH (NIBIB and NCI), NASA, and NSF; and (3) obtaining input from the research community on related advances in imaging science and engineering. Grantees described their research and discussed collaborations that have and could form across disciplines. Dr. John Haller of the NIBIB was the Workshop Chair, and Theresa Smith of the NIBIB served on the Workshop Organizing Committee. Other Committee members included Bruce Hamilton (NSF), John Emond (NASA), Gary Dorfman (NIH/NCI), and Lawrence Clarke (NIH/NCI). A summary report of the meeting will be prepared and posted on the NIBIB Web site.

June 22, 2004: BECON/BISTIC Symposium Conducted on June 21-22
A symposium on "Biomedical Informatics for Clinical Decision Support: A Vision for the 21st Century" was conducted on June 21-22 at the Natcher Conference Center on the NIH Main Campus in Bethesda, Maryland. The Symposium was jointly conducted by the NIH's Bioengineering Consortium (BECON) and the Biomedical Information Science and Technology Consortium (BISTIC). The purpose of the meeting was to identify opportunities, needs, and directions for applying computer science and informatics principles and methods to clinical decision support. Specific areas covered during the meeting included data management (databases and digital libraries), enabling technologies (modeling, software tools, and techniques), and translational informatics. Approximately 400 people attended the symposium. NIH Co-Chairs were Drs. Laurence Clarke (NCI) and Peter Lyster (NIBIB), Extramural Co-Chairs were Drs. Ruzena Bajcsy (UC-Berkeley) and Michael Vannier (University of Chicago), and Organizational Co-Chairs were Mariaileen Sourwine (NIBIB) and Anna Retzke (NIBIB). Presentations from all speakers will be made available on the BECON website at http://www.becon.nih.gov/symposium2004.htm.
June 30, 2004: Report Issued on the Interagency Conference on Research at the Interface of the Life Sciences and Physical Sciences
The final report has been issued for the “Interagency Workshop on Research at the Interface of the Life Sciences and the Physical Sciences”. The workshop was held on May 10, 2004 on the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Main Campus in Bethesda, Maryland. The workshop was coordinated by the NIH and the National Science Foundation (NSF) in response to language in the House of Representatives reports accompanying the FY2004 Appropriations Bill which suggested that the NIH and NSF convene an interagency conference to discuss how agencies can effectively facilitate research at the interface of the life and physical sciences.
The final report, as well as additional information about this meeting, is available.
