October 19, 2005: NIH Will Require Electronic Submission of Competing Grant Applications

Big changes are coming to grants submission at the National Institutes of Heath. NIH will soon require all cometing research grant applications to come in electronically via the web portal of Grants.gov on a new SF 424 Research and Related (R&R) applications.

The changes are phased in by the type of grant program (mechanism), beginning with the December 1, 2005, submission date for small business (SBIR/STTR) applicants and culminating in May 2007 when all grant programs will be submitted electronically on the new form.

Applicants should carefully note the transition date for the grant mechanism for which they wish to apply. More information can be found at the NIH Electronic Research Administration web site (http://era.nih.gov/ElectronicReceipt/).

November 22, 2005: HHMI-NIBIB Interfaces Initiative Awardees Announced

Ten U.S. universities are the recipients of the first awards under the HHMI-NIBIB Interfaces Initiative for Interdisciplinary Graduate Research Training. Each university will receive a grant of $1 million from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) to initiate fundamental changes in the way Ph.D. scientists are trained.

The three-year grants will be used to develop innovative graduate education programs designed to produce a cadre of scientists with the knowledge and skills to conduct research at the interface between the biomedical, physical, and computational sciences.

When HHMI support ends, the NIBIB will step in with peer-reviewed institutional training grants in order to sustain the programs through the critical early years.

Additional information on this joint HHMI-NIBIB initiative and the list of awardees can be found at http://www.hhmi.org/news/112205.html.

December 16, 2005: NIBIB Announces Workshop on Improving Health Care Accessibility through Point-of-Care Technologies

The National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering, in partnership with the National Science Foundation, is organizing a workshop to address the topic of "Improving Health Care Accessibility through Point-of-Care Technologies." The meeting, which will be held on April 11-12, 2006, in Washington, DC, will bring together a diverse group of technology developers, clinicians, and clinical researchers to assess the technological developments required for advances in point-of-care testing and to identify high priority clinical applications that can benefit from a point-of-care approach. Specifically, advances in several technology areas will be considered, including sensors and lab-on-a-chip devices, noninvasive patient monitoring, low-cost imaging, health informatics, and telehealth. Clinical needs will be addressed in the areas of primary care, emergency medical services, home and community-based health care, and health care in developing countries. Additionally, representatives from the in vitro diagnostics, patient monitoring, imaging, and telehealth industries will provide their perspectives on commercializing technologies for point-of-care use. The impact of regulatory and reimbursement issues will be addressed, as will various topics relevant to the manufacturing of low-cost devices.

Please join us to learn about the challenges and opportunities associated with the development and adoption of point-of-care technologies from a "systems" perspective, and to discuss, with experts in the field, your concerns about establishing programs in this area. The meeting will highlight successful collaborations and provide opportunities to network with clinicians and technology developers to begin building interdisciplinary teams. Additionally, the meeting will present an opportunity to inform the NIBIB, NIH, and NSF about the role that these agencies can play in bridging the technology/clinical gap as it relates to the development of point-of-care technologies.

Mark your calendars for this exciting and comprehensive workshop! Please visit the workshop website at www.capconcorp.com/nibib-pointofcare for more information and for future announcements.

This activity has been approved for AMA PRA credit.
